Going Out like a Lion?

This can not be possible.  We started and ended the month of March with great weather.  I was expecting bad storms or snow for today.  Nope.  We have lovely 70 degree weather and lots of sunshine.  Here's the proof.

March 31th

This wraps up my third month of blogging.  Wow!

After we read scriptures today we will have read everyday for three months.  That's an accomplishment.  Especially with the willing readers (insert sarcasm here) we have.  We have to celebrate that.  Not sure what we'll do.

Meg has softball practice today.  Oh, the fun has begun and won't end until...July?

Added at 5:58 p.m.  The current temp is 77.  Nice.

Sweets

I my opinion, and probably the rest of my family's opinion, you can never get enough sweets.  After a morning of unproductive house hunting, Mickey and I stopped at Sam's for a few things.  (Kade went home with a friend from school.  Thanks so much, Amy.)  We got the things we needed and then remembered we are sponsoring an Easter egg hunt on Sunday in honor of Kade's birthday.  We had to get some candy to fill about 10 dozen eggs.  This is what we got.

Candy

I just hope it lasts until Sunday afternoon.

Finally Five!

Blasting off

Kade's been waiting and waiting to turn five.  The day has finally come.  He celebrated most of the day.  He woke up to balloons and streamers.  Had chocolate cupcakes at preschool.  Had lunch and played games with a friend at Chuck E. Cheese.  Opened presents after Mickey came home.  Had another cupcake before bed.  He's so happy to be five.  I hope he enjoys this fun year.

We always hear good comments about Kade from his school and church teachers and other adults.  Kade is a sweet, charismatic boy.  He has more of his dad's personality than his mom's.  Which means people are just drawn to him.  He is funny.  He can also be sensitive and considerate of other's needs, especially mine.  Kade is anxiously waiting to play baseball this year and soccer again in the fall.  He has his bad moments, like all people do, but overall he is one great kid.  We're so happy to have him in our family.

Happy Birthday, Kade!

P.S.  I will post a link to more pictures soon.  I have a lot to go through and have had a really bad sinus headache all day.

Performing

I've had a few people after me for a while about hiding my talents.  That's totally not what I've been doing.  I just DON'T like being in front of a lot of people.  Call it performance anxiety or whatever you like but I'm not hiding.  In December, my friend, who happens to be the choir director at church, asked Mickey and I to sing a solo/duet part of a song.  I agreed.  Then I freaked.  She's one of a few people who I can't say no to.  (Don't abuse that now that you know, K.)  I somehow made it through that frightening ordeal.  That gave me a little more courage to do something again.

In Relief Society, the woman's class at church, they have time for a practice song.  The music director and pianist thought it would be nice to have the ladies take turns and do musical presentations.  I had been thinking about it for a while but couldn't quiet get myself to sign up.  I got the nerve after the director had her 18 year old sister come in a play a song on the piano.  I thought if she can do it so can I.

March 28th

Today was the day.  I was very nervous.  My heart rate about probably twice as fast as normal.  Somehow my hands were not very shaky and I made it through the song.  I did hesitate in one spot and played a wrong note once.  Hopefully not many people noticed.  I was so happy to be finished and proud of myself for playing.  I played one of my favorite songs by Yiruma, "Kiss the Rain".  The funny thing is that the weather cooperated with light rain.  The performance made a few people tear up.  I'll take that as a good thing.

Here's a video of the song if you'd like to listen to it.  It's not me.

Surprise!

Today is Amanda's birthday.  Chris decided to throw her a surprise party.  The kids were really excited about it.  We told them last week.  I was so worried they would let something slip at Meg's concert on Tuesday but they never said a word.

We got there a little early.  The kids were almost literally bouncing off the walls with excitement.  They were each armed with a can of silly string ready to spray at Tia.  Here they are waiting for her to come back home.

Surprise

I didn't get a great shot of it but they covered her in silly string while Chris stood back laughing.  We had dinner and then Amanda's birthday dessert before she opened presents.

After her little party was over we pulled out presents and a cupcake cake for Kade's birthday.  There wasn't a good day to have a family party this year so we're dividing it up.  Here are a few pictures from the evening.

Chris and Amanda got Kade a refill of Nerf darts that will go with something he gets Monday from us.  Since he couldn't really use them Chris pulled out a piece of pvc pipe and showed him how to blow the dart through the pipe.  (This was something he learned while on his mission.)  Kade didn't really have enough air to make it go far but he thought it was fun.

Tired...

...of househunting.  That's the title of today's picture.  (It was a last minute one today.  Somehow the day got away from me.)

Tired of househunting

We have been going over and over houses on line.  It's SO nice to do that in the comfort of your own home.  I couldn't imagine having to go look at all of them.  Some websites have great search options that let you narrow down choices by subdivision, number of bedrooms, square footage, or even by school.  We have found a couple more we're going to look at next week.  Our weekend is already full and Kade's birthday is Monday.

Gloomy Day

The day has been full of gloomy weather and some disappointment.  By the time I thought about taking a picture of a rain puddle - which would have totally summed up my day - they had all dried up.  (Disappointment.)  The big disappointment was not getting the house we made an offer on.  Someone else swooped in with a better offer yesterday.  The lady also took her sweet time letting us know too.  (A morning full of suspense is not good on the nerves or tight muscles.)

I had a few rays of sunshine today.  The first was Mattey's awards program at school.  She was recognized for making the honor roll and also for her good citizenship.  Way to go, Mat!  The second was the inspector said our house was good.  Hooray.  The third bright spot was this.

Strawberries

I bought these at Meijer this afternoon.  I could smell them as I walked up.  We ate some with our pancakes and eggs for dinner.  They tasted even better than they smelled.  Thank you California for growing some good berries.  Mickey said we needed to have some shortcake.  I'll get right on that...tomorrow.

P.S.  I have come to the conclusion that I enjoy taking pictures of things that don't move.

Art Work

Wouldn't you love to have this hanging on your fridge?

March 24th

I would.  I LOVE it!  (Maybe it would scare me away from snacking.)  This is one of many projects Kade worked on this week at school.  They really got into dinosaur week.  I love all the fun creative things that the kids have brought home from preschool but can someone please tell me what I'm supposed to do with a dinosaur diorama (shoe box)?  I think I have three now, one from each kid.  I put it in the plastic tote where all the other art work is but it takes up SO much space.  I did take a picture of it so maybe I could accidently loose it sometime?

The Violinist

The Violinist

Tonight Meg had an orchestra concert.  She is doing so well with learning to play and perform.  She did a great job tonight.  She is looking forward to taking orchestra again next year.  The concert ended with the high school orchestra's performance.  They were GOOD.  It was good way to inspire the younger players.

This afternoon we made an offer on a house!!!  It's exciting and a little scary.  We've been so busy we've hardly thought about it.  We should hear back by noon Thursday.

Blooming

Dafodills

I guess Spring is finally here.

Meg's entire school took a field trip to a bowling alley today.  The 5th & 6th graders went together and then later the 7th & 8th graders went.  It was a fascinating site watching almost all the students come out in their school shirts.

Mat, for some reason (this is a phrase she uses all the time), has taken a liking to the Captain Underpants books.  She also ate a bunch of snacks while the kids stayed at my parents' house this afternoon.  I don't think she'll ever get much fat on her.  Lucky.

Kade has dinosaur week at preschool.  Today he painted a dinosaur and a habitat in a shoe box.  He also put stickers on dino eggs.

Mickey and I are finishing up some minor repairs on the house before the inspectors walk through.  Not sure when that will be.

Going Ethnic

We had a chili cook-off at church but we ended up not going for a few reasons.  I have been wanting to make a chili with chicken.  I found a recipe that sounded good on allrecipes.comWhite Bean Chicken Chili.  It has a very Tex-Mex flavor.  I thought it was good.  Kade dressed the part.

Competitive Siblings

Sibling rivalry is not a new thing.  It probably exists in just about every family.  In ours its the girls who are most competitive.  Today they were trying to take each other down.

Sibling Rivalry

If I were a betting person my money would have been on Mattey.  She weighs in at about 50 pounds but she is strong and determined.  Meg is about a foot taller and out weighs her by 30+ pounds.  If she applied herself, I'm sure Meg would have a chance at winning.  But ever since they were both little Megan was always concerned about hurting Mattey and would let Mat beat her up.

Although she gives in physically she tries to compete in other ways.  Last week Mattey had her tooth pulled.  She got some attention for that and a nice monetary donation from the Tooth Fairy.  The next day Meg told me her tooth was loose.  I thought she'd have a few days until she got it out.  Nope.  She came out of her room around 10 p.m. to tell us she pulled it out.  She just couldn't let Mat have all the attention.  This week they both brought home their report cards.  Again both made honor roll.  So glad for that, no one's feelings got hurt.

A note on the house:  It's official.  The house is SOLD.  They excepted the counter offer this afternoon.  We also toured a house we really like.  Keep your fingers crossed and your prayers coming.

Blue Skies

March 19th

This was the view through the moon roof while waiting for Meg to come out of school.  LOVE the blue skies and sunshine.  I had to photograph it because it's supposed to rain here the next few days.  And be colder.

On a side note...we had a last minute request to view our house.  45 minutes after the start of the showing our realtor called and said they wanted to make an offer!!!!  We countered this evening and will know tomorrow what they say.  We may be homeless.  This is giving Mickey some anxiety.  That leaves me being the positive one.  That's not a role I'm used to playing.

Couldn't pick just one

This afternoon we had another showing.  By the way, the second showing we had on Tuesday...it's between our house and one other.  They will decide next week.  I don't know what I prefer to happen.  Okay, so I want our house to be picked but then we'd be homeless, so then I don't want our house to be picked.  Back to today.  The weather was beautiful again.  Loving it.  Like yesterday we took the kids to a playground before heading to the library to do homework.  Mickey had the camera today.  I couldn't pick just one so you'll get three.  I'll have to figure out how to fix it in photo shop so I can print all three as one 4" X 6".

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone from our own little leprechaun.

Leprechaun

We didn't do too much to celebrate the day.  Meg reluctantly allowed me to put a shamrock print ribbon on her ponytail this morning.  She had a fieldtrip and had to wear her school shirt which doesn't have green.  Mattey chose to wear a sparkly green (Christmas) dress.  Kade had a party at school.  We all played outside for a while at Mat's school during a showing in which the people were a no show.  (None of the playground pictures turned out the way I wanted them too.)  We didn't even eat any green foods like last year.  We had breakfast foods instead.  I was going to make shamrock rice krispie treats but never found the time to do it.  Guess my new shamrock cookie cutter will have to wait until next year.

The picture I should have taken today was of Mickey hanging out the window cleaning the outside.  Maybe I can get him to re-enact it tomorrow.  I had asked him to help me clean the outside of the window behind the screen on the big window.  Somehow that turned into cleaning all the windows.  Good thing we don't have that many.

Hope you all enjoyed the day.

March 16th

Tonight we went out to dinner since we needed to be out of the house from 5:30-6:30.  What else are we supposed to do?  We went to Max & Erma's.  We haven't been there in a while and they had a sign that said kids eat free.  I think Mattey was celebrating St. Patrick's Day a day early.

Busted

Her and Megan both ordered a beer.   IBC root beer, that is.

A New Cousin

For our FHE activity tonight we took the kids over to Chris & Amanda's to meet their new cousin, Lacie.

Lacie

Personally, I don't think she looks a thing like her adopted parents but they seem to love her already.  Our kids got a kick out of her.

I'm off to help Mickey finish cleaning the grout.  We have a 2nd showing tomorrow!  I'm trying so hard not to get my hopes up since we have zero prospects ourselves.

Choose the Right

CTR ring

After church I was standing in a classroom by the door and I saw Kade and Mickey in the hall.  Kade was animatedly telling Mickey about something.  Next thing I know he comes running to me and shows me is new "CDR" ring.  It's really a CTR (meaning Choose the Right) ring and he knows the letters but that's how he says it.  Kind of cute.  He was SO excited about winning the ring in a game of bingo.  I wish I could have gotten a video of him telling the story because it was priceless.

New Beginnings

This morning we (Megan, Mickey, and I) were invited to a brunch at church for New Beginnings.  This year Meg will be turning 12 and entering the Young Women program.  This brunch was to introduce Megan to the program and let the other girls have a chance to get to know her.  Sadly Meg is the only girl turning 12 this year.  A student from my Sunday School class, Sarah, was the one to introduce her.  I've known Sarah since she and her twin Dana were about 6 months old.  I used to babysit for them and their older sister.  (Now they are graduating and I feel old.)  I thought it was nice that one of them was doing the introduction.  Sarah found out that Megan's favorite snack was cookies and gave her a plateful along with a Welcome poster with the YW theme on it and a stuffed bear.  Here's Meg and Sarah.

The ds

ds X 3

We have three Nintendo dses at our house.  The girls each have their own and Kade has kind of inherited Mickey's.  Sometimes I think these things are wonderful because it can keep the kids from fighting and entertain them when they're bored.  But then the bickering starts.  "____ won't let me play _______ game."  That's when I want to throw them in the trash and make them play a board game together or send them to their rooms.  Today we had a little of both.

One Less Tooth

A few days ago Mattey complained to me about her tooth hurting.  I had her open up and let me look at it.  I didn't see anything.  I offered pain relief but she refused.  The next day she said her gums hurt.  I took another look.  There was what looked like a swollen spot above the "hurting tooth" with possible puss inside.  Not good.  She saw our dentist on Tuesday.  It was abscessed.  Today Mickey took her to an oral surgeon and it was yanked out.  Thankfully it was a baby tooth.  She is doing much better than we thought she would be.  She had a terrible experience when she was two.  She had to have some dental work done and a tooth removed.  I'm thankful she had a good experience this time, well, as good as it could be having a tooth pulled.  She didn't really like being numb.  It is a weird feeling.  Here she is with her crooked smile.  Her tooth is inside the bigger tooth she's holding.

March 10th

Today was just beautiful outside even if part of the day was gray.  The temperature made it to the 60s.  Yesterday and today I wore sandals.  Kade won the argument and wore sandals to school today.  My toes have been naked for several weeks now.  I was very happy to paint them and show them off.

March 10th

I love this polish color.  It's called "Blackberry Baby".

This afternoon Mickey did some cleaning in the yard and garage while Mat and Kade played outside.  Meg worked more on the presentation part of her science project.  It's almost done.

One of Our Favorite Places

We had another showing today.  Our house really likes all the attention it's getting.  (As of right now, we have two more this week.)  I have needed to come up with somewhere to take the kids on occasion.  (It's not quite park weather yet, too much mud.)  For that I turned to our favorite place, at least one of them.  (By "our", I mean me and the kids.)  That is the library.

March 9th

(Kade's trying to figure out which Beast Quest book he needs.)

Kade and I visited there this afternoon for a little while before meeting Mickey for a quick lunch and our own viewing of a house.  I'm sure the library will get old soon for those of us that go 3-5 times a week but I can really relax there among all those books.  Our library was re-built and re-opened last year.  They have nice cozy spots to cuddle up with your kids to read.  They also have a fireplace with leather couches nearby for the adults to sink into.  There is even a little snack area with vending machines.  It's like a home away from home.

New Life

I love Spring.  Things miraculously come back to life.  I saw the leaves sticking up the other day and now there are already buds.

New Life

These flowers tend to jump the gun a little.  I hope they don't get frozen in the next couple weeks.  It won't happen this week.  It's supposed to be in the 50s all week!

Science Project

Today was an "Oh, shoot!  I haven't taken a picture of anything yet." day.  We went to church.  Came home, had lunch.  I helped Meg redo the last popcorn popping for her experiment.  We dropped the kids off at my parents' so we could go to an open house.  Didn't love the house.  Picked the kids up.  Mickey helped Meg with her layout for the science project.  Had dinner.  Read scriptures.  Mickey helped Meg some more.  So I thought it would be fitting to get a picture of Meg typing up her info.

Science Fair

The project is due on Friday.  I think if she works at it a little every day it will get done.  By the way, Meg found out that when you store your popcorn (non-microwave) in the refrigerator you get the best popping results.

Learning a New Skill

Kade is learning to be a handyman like his dad.  Today Amanda and Chris moved into their first house.  Mickey helped with the loading and unloading of the truck and the kids and I showed up later to help unpack and clean.  It was decided that the locks needed to be changed.  The men went off to buy the supplies.  Kade was right there in the middle of things for the first door.  He was thrilled he was allowed to use the tools.  I'm sure he'll need a refresher course for the next locks he changes.

Learning a new skill

The girls were no slouches.  They were running things up and down the stairs, vacuuming, and chowing down on red vines until they needed a movie break.  I unpacked most of the kitchen.  Pictures of these events were taken but did not turn out clear so Kade gets to star in another potd.  Good thing he's cute.  You gotta love that expression of total concentration.

Clean, Clean, Clean

That's what we've been doing a lot of lately.  It's not been deep cleaning though.  Mostly a wipe off here and there.  We had two showings already this week plus one tonight and one tomorrow.  I couldn't get the cleaning done without the help of my friends.  (Or my husband.)

Cleaning Products

The kids have been really good about picking up after themselves.  They still need to be reminded but maybe by the time we move they will have had enough practice it will be second nature.  Ha.

We looked at two houses today.  One...let's just say odd layout, drowning possibilities in the pond behind it, and they have a cat.  The other has potential but needs to be brought to the here and now and not the 70s.  It also had a tiny yard and not a full basement (meaning there's basement under part but not the entire house.  Now why would they do that?)

Is it Spring yet?

This afternoon Mattey and Kade went out to play while Mickey did some clean up work in the garage.  The reds enjoyed themselves tromping around in the mud and and swinging in the almost 40 degree weather.  The sunshine is SO nice.  (The fun ended when Mat threw a snowball in Kade's face.)

March 4th

Has Spring come early?  I doubt it.  We'll probably get a few more inches of snow before Spring really settles in but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Progress Report

Kade's teacher sent home a progress report today.  He's doing great.

Kade's progress report

There was a note from Mrs. R. inside.  "Kaden is very responsible and a great helper.  I can always depend on him to help me out.  He is also a good friend and enjoys playing with all of the kids.  Kaden is a terrific listener and he follows directions very well.  He does the crafts and activities independently and neatly, and he is quick to help others out if they are confused.  Kade also likes circle time and he loves to contribute ideas to our conversations.  He especially likes when we becomes scientists and we do experiments.  Kade does a very good job of identifying letters and numbers.  I have loved being his teacher these past two years and watching him grow."

Mrs. R. has known Kade since he was a bump in my belly so she's really gotten to watch him grow.  I'm glad she's been his teacher this year and last.

Other things Kade really enjoys doing are:  play dough, water play, singing, instruments, rhythms, block building, story time, science, show & tell, puzzles, manipulative table toys, puppets, telling stories, asking questions, sharing ideas, solving problems, directing activities, and acquiring new skills.

I think this kid will be ready to take on kindergarten in the fall.  We'll have to work on letters, phonics, and writing over the summer.  He's already figuring out math.  It's so fun to watch him grasp the concept of addition.

We Have Grass

Kade was looking out the window and said, "The sunshine is giving us grass.  I'm so happy to have grass."  I thought that was cute so my picture goes with that thinking.

March 2nd

The saying goes "In like a lamb, out like a lion".  I wonder what the end of March will be like.  This is our second sunny day and the rest of the week is supposed to be nice too.  Maybe even 50's on Sunday.  What a treat!  I just hope the lion part is rain/thunder storms and not snow storms.

Simple Decorating

It's the first of March and we had a NICE sunny day.  The snow melted a little and I don't believe there were many, if any, clouds in the sky.  I would love to see that continue.  (If anyone has control over that.)

Keeping it simple is my theme for this year.  At least that's what I said in January before the house was on the market and I had to make a couple quilts in two weeks.  I don't do a lot of decorating for the holidays.  I don't have a ton of space and I DON'T like clutter.  But I do have a grapevine wreath I like to hang on my front door.  I put different things on it for each holiday.  I find it's a lot easier to have one wreath and a bag full of changeable decorations instead of 12 different wreaths and nowhere to store them.  This is the first year I've ever had something for St. Patrick's Day on my door.

March 1st

You know, you just can't find wooden shamrocks anywhere.  I made mine out of felt.  I would have liked to use a thicker ribbon but sometimes you have to use what you can find.  I hope this wreath brings us a little luck this month.  I suppose it won't bring a lot of luck since I didn't make a four leafed clover.  Oops.
