homemade chicken nuggets

chicken nuggets
It was my turn to cook. Mom had found these on Flicker (Pinterest). They take only two minutes to cook. It was very easy to make and they tasted like the one's from Chick-fa-la. All they needed was a bit of homemade lemonade and waffle fries.

Birthday Time, Once Again

Once again, it's Mom's birthday. She won't tell us kids how old she is.  Kaden got her Kelly green and gold earrings, necklace, and ring. Mattey got her a couple of bottles of purple nail polishes. I, Megan, got her some black and gold flower ring and black and gold earrings.
Mom's birthday
Here she is with almost all of her gifts. Poor Fiona. Today was the day of her getting fixed. Now she is home, thankfully not with a cone. Instead, she's wearing a tank that Kade let her wear. Poor Fi. She's so tired and in pain. It has been a week since school started. Kade and Mat have been enjoying it, but not me. I have so much homework. Hopefully it'll get better. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!!!!! Get better Fiona.

Graceful is Not Her Middle Name

Today Fiona is six months and two days.  Just like for my kids I am recording a development milestone for her.

This morning I was running a little late and didn't start our morning walk right after Kade got on the bus.  When I came back downstairs I found Fi in the foyer looking out the window.  I knew the gate was closed.  I had been the last one through it.  I put her back behind the gate and finished getting ready for our walk.

We took our walk, about 3 miles, and when we came home I found a very unpleasant surprise that Fiona had left for me.  She had pooped in the family room.  What is up with that?  I was so not happy.  I cleaned it up with Fi behind bars.  I ran upstairs to quickly do something and she somehow escaped the gate again.  This time to pee in the living room.  While cleaning this up I heard her jump over the gate, well, really jump and then land.  I gave her a good chewing out and tossed her in the crate.  I had had enough of her ornery three-year-old like behavior.

After lunch I worked with her a little on ringing a bell to let me know she needs to go out.  (This is the only complaint I really have about her, the fact that she doesn't communicate to me that she needs to go out.  It'll come but I'm a little impatient.)  Then I set up the camera in hopes of recording her jumping the gate.  I went upstairs to wait.  I didn't wait long.

Have you ever seen a Fi fly?  No?  Well check this out.
The other times she jumped she made it the first time or I would have heard her crash.  We think this video is hilarious but I'm concerned that I won't be able to keep her separated/segregated when I need to unless she's crated.  I hate to crate her more than I have to but if this behavior continues then that's where she'll be.  I have to wonder if the chewing out and the time out worked.  She hasn't jumped the gate since.  Maybe I need to look into doing some kind of agility training with her.  That's quite a jump she has, don't you think?

By the way, her middle name is June or June bug if you want to make it longer.

Cinco de Mayo

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year I made some mexican type foods.  One of them was this yummy treat.
tres leches cake
Tres Leches Cake.  That's Three Milk Cake for all you non-spanish speaking folks.  Can you see the milk at the bottom of the piece starting to puddle?

I'd never had it or made it before but wanted to try it.  I thought it was very good.  Two others agreed with me. The other two....thought it was soggy but ate the cool whip topping.  At least more people liked this than the flan I made a few years ago.  I had to eat that all by myself.

I Want to Start the Day Over

This was an email I sent to my friend Amy this morning.

I want to go back to bed and start the day over.
First, I wake up and am achy all over. This is from the migraine I've been dealing with for the past two days. Today should be the third and final day.  It better be. I have meds for it now and it does help but not 100% and they make me very tired.
Second, R. (the carpool mom) calls and basically, but nicely, says she doesn't want J. (her daughter) riding with Meg if she's still sick. She thinks Meg got J. sick last time.  Is bronchitis contagious?  R. just can't have J. getting sick again. They have things coming up.  I nicely, but unhappily, say I'll drive my girls this morning.  This really puts a wrench in my morning because then I will have to drive Kade as well and that'll push everything back. Meg ends up staying home again because she really isn't feeling better.
Third, Fiona has diarrhea in the hall.  That was fun.  I know she doesn't feel well so I can't get mad.  I don't.  Guess I'm calling the vet again.
Fourth, Kade says his stomach hurts.  Now is this for real or because he witnessed the mess in the hall?  I don't know.  I don't feel like fighting it and we picked up a tons of movies at the library yesterday so they should be glued all day while they recover. I have a second so I call Mickey to vent a little and then Mat, not so nicely, tells me she has to leave right this minute because she's doing the pledge today.  That's when you see me.
Fifth, I get home from taking Mat and I can't find my wallet.  That's the breaking point. I have a lot of cash in it and I didn't want to go through canceling all the cards.  I call Mickey again.
Then sixthly, Fiona makes another mess in the hall.  By this point I'm crying and Mickey suggests that I get Meg to look for my wallet while I clean up the mess. He's also saying he could come home if I need him to.  I tell him I'll make it through.
On a good note, Meg found my wallet right away.  Sometimes it just takes a different set of eyes and a flashlight to find something in a dark van.  And now that Fi has pooped twice I can cancel our walk for this morning.  My sore foot will like that.

Extra Fabric

30 minutes after I bought fabric for an order the order was canceled.  So...I have some extra fabric laying around if anyone would like me to make something for them.
extra fabric
Isn't it nice?  Do I have any takers?  Does anyone know if Hobby Lobby with take back cut fabric?  Maybe I need to make myself another church bag....hmm...

I even bought matching aqua ribbon.

Lilacs

A few years ago Mickey and the kids got me three lilac bushes for Mother's Day.  We moved them to the new house.  One of the dwarf ones is mostly dead but since there is some green on it I thought I'd let it go to see if it would do something.  There's more green on it this year than last so there may be some hope for it.

On the big lilac bush there is only one bloom.  The others have died due to frost.  (I really don't like frost but I forget to cover my plants at night.)  I thought the bloom was too pretty not to photograph.  Wish I could share the fragrance with you.  Guess you'll have to use your imagination.

The other dwarf bush seems to be loaded.  Can't wait for those blooms to open.  I'll be sure to photograph it when it does.

Azalea Bush

There is a lovely azalea bush growing on the back side of our house.  The blossoms have finally opened.  I think it's beautiful even though some of it didn't make it through the frost earlier this week.

Will that get clean?

I opened the dishwasher earlier to put a few dirty dishes in.  On the bottom rack I found this.
Will this get clean?
Do you think this will really come clean?  I don't.  (Our dishwasher is good but I don't think it's that good.)  I talked to the person who put it in there.  She thought it would.  To avoid frustration when I empty the clean dishes I decided to just rinse it out some before running the dishwasher.

Planting Seed

We've got a few bare spots in the grass.  Mickey found some seed in the garage and decided to try to fill in the holes.

The Mormon Vs. The Moron

Mickey has found these YDraw.com videos and loves them.  I've watched a couple.  Here is a new one we watched today.  So good.  Even if you aren't for Mitt just watch for the artistic value.

Mitt Romney

So, who are you voting for, the mormon or the moron?

Western Dance

Mickey went to a youth dance at church tonight.  It was Western themed.  He borrowed some things from his dad and went looking like this.
Sheriff Mickey
What you can't see are the cowboy boots with spurs.  He made a jingling noise when he walked.

A Little Company

While working in the studio today I had a little company.  She sniffed every square inch she could get to, looked out the window a few times, chewed on anything that I let her have, and when that became boring she curled up, or in some instances stretched out, on the floor and fell asleep.

Later I took her outside with the intent of getting a good picture.  I think I got it.
Fi in the grass
This one is even better.
Cute Fiona
How could you not love this face?

Fiona is getting along well.  She seems to have adjusted nicely.  We walk for thirty minutes twice a day.  She's very mellow with me but can be rowdy with the kids and sometimes Mickey.  House training is coming along.

Dragon Slayers' Academy

Mickey and Meg are not the only ones reading around here.  Mattey reads daily for school.  Kade and I have been reading a new series our friends recommended, Dragon Slayer's Academy.
dragon slayers' academy
We are now on the third book.  In this series there are oddly named people, a pig that speaks pig latin (that's a lot of fun to read out loud), and a soft hearted hero who accidentally kills dragons.

He's Caught the Fire

Megan wanted to read the Hunger Games series.  She lucked out that I have them.  For some reason Mickey decided to bring the first book with us on our trip.  He's not a reader so this was a bit of a surprise.  We did have some down time at the hotel and he got sucked into the story.  He and Megan are now fighting over who gets to read the second book, Catching Fire.  Mickey steals it from her after Meg goes to bed.  I caught him reading tonight.
Caught the Fire

A Fiona note:  She didn't make a sound last night.  I know, all you people who have ever had a puppy are jealous.  She's awesome.  We are walking with the leash a little better and she flies around the back yard when given the freedom.  She seems to be more at ease with every passing hour.  She's still pretty mellow.  I hope that continues.

Giving In...

...to child-pressure.

We bit the big one today.  After months and months of asking if we can get a dog, we picked up a puppy this morning.  She's a cavachon.  She's four months old.

I found her on line at a breeder a little over an hour from our house.  We went last Monday to meet her.  I wanted to think about it a while while we were gone.  I also wanted to read Cesar Millan's book, How to Raise the Perfect Dog, before doing anything.  {I learned a lot from that book.  I learned that some of Cooper's (our first dog) problems were my fault.  I do not want that to happen again.}

We talked about the puppy a lot while out of town.  Ultimately it was up to me and also Mickey's allergies.  We decided to give it a go.

After all my reading and thinking I think I'm ready for this, even though I had a really nervous stomach all morning.  She was shy and timid last week.  Today she was acting more like a regular curious puppy.  I wasn't happy that the breeders hadn't had her in the house to get used to the noises or that she hadn't worn a collar yet.  Cesar would not think they were very responsible breeders.

The ride home was good.  She snuggled on my lap the entire way.  She was hesitant when we got home but within a few hours was warming up.  House training is under way.  (Can you believe they hadn't worked on that either?!)  This evening she was playing with the kids in her quarantined area.  She's even getting used to the leash, a little.

Here she is.  Miss Fiona.
Fiona
This picture doesn't really do her justice.  She is absolutely darling.  Her fur/hair is so soft.  I gave her a bath and blew her dry.  She didn't mind at all.  (Her waves got tighter after the bath.  So cute.)  Maybe she'll learn to tolerate all the chaos that goes on around here.  So far Mickey has not gotten sick.  She might be a keeper.

I've volunteered to sleep on the couch tonight with Fiona in her crate nearby so Mickey can hopefully get some sleep.  I hope I get some.

Easter

Happy Easter!

This morning we checked out of our hotel, stopped for church in a suburb of Cleveland, and then drove home.  Thankfully the Easter bunny found the baskets, filled them, and left them where the kids could find them.  Some little person was worried he wouldn't get anything.

After we got home I threw a ham in the oven and rested for a bit.  Per Mat's request we made Peep nests again.

We had a very laid back family and yummy dinner.

The Indians

This is the second time (here's the first) that we've gone somewhere and were able to take in a pro baseball game.  The Indians played the Blue Jays.  Opening day was Thursday and lasted 16 innings!  We didn't know what to expect for today's game.
Indians Game
I guess the sun was a little too bright for Mattey.  How is it that all three of them have Adidas on?  Huh.

Kade was the most excited about going to the game.
enjoying the game

Mattey was the least thrilled.  In fact she really didn't want to go.  I suggested that she bring a book.  She heeded my advise and this is how she spent the majority of the game.
Reading at the game
That book was a lifesaver.  She almost finished it.

The game went into the 12th inning.  It was a pretty good game and not too long for 12 innings since a lot of them were three up, three down.  We lucked out having seats in the sun.  If we hadn't we would have froze.  Oh, the Blue Jays won, in case you were wondering.  We'll have to see if they get to the World Series like the Cardinals did last year.  That would be funny.

More Cleveland

Today was better than yesterday, in regards to the attractions.  We started the day at The Great Lake Science Center.
G.L. Science Center
I didn't get many good pictures there.  Don't you hate it when someone changes the setting on the camera and you don't check it the next time you use it?  Frustrating.

We spent a few hours there.  They had some good hands on exhibits on the second floor.  The first floor was pretty much dedicated to NASA and John Glenn.  We missed out on the Grand Canyon IMAX movie.  The kids didn't really want to go.

Because that wasn't enough walking around, looking, and doing we went to the zoo.
cleveland zoo
We didn't see any elephants crossing but we did have a pretty close encounter.
elephant encounter
It's like she knew I wanted a good picture because she walked right over to me.

We also saw my favorite, giraffes.  This one was in a bit of an awkward position.
um...awkward
She reminds me of Melman on Madagascar.  The animators totally got down the giraffe-ness for him.

Cleveland, OH

We have gotten bad at planning trips well in advance.  Spring break kind of snuck up on us.  We only had a few days to go anywhere so we didn't want to have to travel far.  We decided on Cleveland, OH because it was about 4 hours away and we hadn't been there yet.  It also looked like there were a few fun things for us to do.

We hit the road at 8:30.  (There were a few pit stops on the way.)  We went directly to the new aquarium.
Cleveland Aquarium
It opened in January.  It's in a renovated factory along the lake.

We were not too impressed.  We spent about $100 and were only there for about an hour.  We could have stayed longer if we read every sign on the wall but some of us don't have the patience for that.  We've decided not to visit aquariums any more.  They cost too much and there's not always enough to show for the money.  And I have yet to take a good picture of something in an underwater tank.

Here's a couple good ones.  Notice they are not underwater.

Ear Candy

Sweets for the Ears
Mickey ordered these for the kids so they could all listen to their iPods while we take a little trip.  Aren't they cute?

Today is my brother's birthday.  Happy birthday, J!

The Lorax

The kids have Spring break this week.  Yesterday was spent cleaning the house so I figured I'd better do something fun with them today.

We picked up Mickey from work and went to see The Lorax.
The Lorax
We all enjoyed the show. The musical opening was a pleasant surprise.  I was a little bummed that Taylor Swift or Zac Efron didn't sing in the movie.

I loved the trees in the movie.  I wish there really was a tree that looked like a fuzzy lollipop.  I would have a dozen in my yard.

Picking a Winner

Someone here picked the winner of the NCAA Championship.
Picked a Winner
If you asked Kade how he picked the winner he will smirk and say he picked "Kentuky" because they started with a K.  I think that's a great way to pick a winner.  I think next year I will pick my teams by color or mascot.

What a view
Wouldn't you love to have this lovely tree outside your window?  Kade's so lucky.

He's 7

He's 7
Kade turns 7 today.  (I mean, 5 years and 24 months.  I told him he can't be older than 5.  Ever.)

We already had his party so we just had a small celebration of his special day with our family.  He got to open one present this morning before school (baseball themed knobs for his dresser).  I took in treats for his class.  Mickey picked him up from school.  He opened some more presents in the afternoon (lots of legos and monster trucks).  We had Kade's requested birthday dinner of roasted turkey roast, corn, biscuits, and pasta.  Then a big cookie from Martin's.

Last year I accidentally started a new tradition with Kade on his birthday.  He asked for a 7 shirt.  I was happy to honor his request.  I found a great tutorial on how to take two shirts to make a baseball style one.  Then I sewed on two 7s.  The one on the back is big, like a baseball shirt would have.  It turned out cute, if I do say so myself.
  The 7 Shirt
Happy Birthday, Kade!  We are so lucky to have you in our family.  You make us laugh all the time.  You are a great little man to have around.  So helpful, sweet, and smart.  Love you.  Now stop growing up, please?

VCD & Allergies

Have you ever heard of vocal cord dysfunction?  I hadn't until today.

Mickey took Meg to an allergy/asthma doctor today.  She's been having a hard time breathing during active times, especially basketball.  The asthma inhaler didn't seem to work.

It turns out that Megan has vocal cord dysfunction and not asthma.  (I'm not going to go into it but if you want to know more about vcd I recommend reading the link above.)  It appears as asthma but is not treated the same way.  Supposedly it's very common.  It usually shows up in very competitive, high achieving, athletic girls.  Um, I think Meg fits in all those categories.  She now has a different inhaler she's supposed to use before activity.  Hopefully this will help her breath better.

Meg also had an allergy test while there.  She's allergic to a lot of things.  Look at her back.
Untitled
The weird thing is she doesn't seem to get sick the way Mickey does.  Hers tend to be more of a contact thing.  Especially cats.

Lots of Locks

This morning I was standing in my bedroom doorway and as I watched Meg walk down the hall toward me I thought, "Oh, she finally did something with her hair (besides a ponytail, that is)."  Then it hit me, "Oh, yeah.  I cut it off last night."

This is what it looks like today.  It's a little choppy but it'll do for now.
short hair

This is what happened last night after Kade's party.
Twelve Inches
Put hair in a ponytail.  Measure 11-1/2".
snip, snip
Let me go at it with the scissors.  (We really needed a good pair for this job.  It took several cuts to get through all that thick hair.)
a few tears
Have a few tears when the tail is off.

Meg was ready for the haircut.  Mickey said something about a little girl being happy with the wig made from her hair and then all three of us teared up.

When the hair is dry we will be sending it to Locks of Love

Almost 7

We had Kade's birthday party today.  The party was baseball themed and I didn't take a single picture of the decor or food so you'll have to use your imagination.

The Food:  We had hot dogs (already in a bun & wrapped in foil, just like at the baseball park), nachos, popcorn, peanuts, and for something a little healthier, fruit and veggies.  The goodie bags were filled with Bazooka gum, cotton candy suckers, cracker jacks and a few other things.  I made cupcakes and decorated them as baseballs.  The cake was supposed to be a mitt but didn't look exactly like one.  (Kade thought it was great so that's all that matters.)
make a wish
The Decor:  I had the birthday banner hung on the mantle.  I made a string of manly pennants and hung them around the island.  I made a baseball diamond beanbag game (the holes were a little too small) and we had a knock down the can game.  That was a hit.

Spring Blossoms

I had such an urge to go for a little walk and photograph some of the spring blossoms on our street.  Here it is March 22nd and Spring is in full swing.  Love it!
