Browser Bag Books

I've wanted to post about this for a while but I always forgot about taking a picture.  I finally remembered today.
Browser Bag Books
Every week Kade's homework in the same.  Monday - spelling words.  Wednesday - story in reader.  Thursday - math worksheet.  Tuesday's homework is to read books from his browser bag.  (He was surprised that I knew what his homework was without looking at the homework sheet.  I'm one smart mom.  What can I say?)  Thankfully he only has to read some of them.  He'd be reading for over an hour if he had to read them all.  There's more than 40.  Each week one or two are added.

He read to me tonight while Mickey and the girls were at church.  He had some real tongue twisters tonight.  "Cluck! Quack! Wham! Whack!" and "Zip! Zap! Quick!" were hard for me to listen to.  Who writes these things?

Mr. & Mrs. Bear

This afternoon I heard the reds playing.  (It was a good day and not a grouchy one.)  I peeked in at them in Kade's room.  They were playing with their big bears.
Mr. & Mrs. Bear
I guess those are their babies on the table.  They played for a while until I had to break up the fun so they'd get their homework done.

Corny Gift

We, the Primary presidency, thought we should give our teachers a little thank you gift at the lunch/training meeting today.  Somehow I volunteered myself for the task of making them.  Luckily our secretary already had a cute (corny) idea.
Corny Gift
The meeting went very well and attendance was good, 14 of 20.  I think all the ladies enjoyed chatting with each other over lunch. We'll have to do it again in about 6 months since all but 2 of our teachers are moving this summer.  Ugh.

Anyone looking to buy a cricut?  I'm not loving mine but I don't actually use it enough to fall in love with it.  I've had it for a little over a year.  Not used it much.  I just bought new blades but it will need a new mat very soon.  I only have the cartridge that came with it.  I bought it for $200 so I'm willing to part with it for about $125.

Ric Rac

One of the things that we have a love/hate relationship with, in our house, is the ric rac that is in the windows.  While we love the way it looks, we hate that they are constantly falling out of the windows.  This is because most of them are probably 20 years old and have been broken before.  Kelly bought some wood glue, so I took the assignment of putting the pieces back together.  Kade helped me with one of them and they all went together pretty smoothly.  They even fit much tighter in the window, so hopefully they will be loved more than hated now.
Ric Rac
In other news, we all chipped in to help get the house ready for the Primary lunch/training.  It was nice having a Saturday where we didn't have an activity that we had to be at.

We finished off the night watching the 1960's Batman show on Me-TV.  Ever since Kade saw this one time, he has been asking when it was going to be on again.  In case anyone cares, it's on Saturday nights from 7-8pm.  POW!  ZAP! SMASH!

Math Games

Mattey has been working on a math game for the last 2 and a half weeks.  She got to bring it home today.

After seeing Mattey's creation Kade had to make a math game of his own.

Both games got played this evening.  I missed playing them because I was making potato soup.

Tuesday night Meg came home from Young Women with two different pies.  She put a little note in the refrigerator that the pies were hers and that we were not to touch them.  (I should have gotten a picture of that.)  The chocolate one she ate the next day.  The cherry one (more of a turnover) needed to be baked before eating.  She decided to have it tonight instead of the strawberry shortcake I made.  It got baked and she devoured the thing in just a few minutes.
Cherry Pie
It looked pretty good.  I was going to ask for a bite but it was pretty much gone by the time I thought about it.  She's been eating like a horse durning this basketball season.  At least I know she runs it all off.

News concerning Mattey:  The flute has been found!  It was in the backseat of the van covered by a blanket.  I believe the van was one spot I suggested looking yesterday.  Hmmm.

I would like to wish my parents a Happy Anniversary.  They have been married for 38 years.  Wow!  I thought about taking a picture of them for the blog but forgot my camera when I stopped by.  I'm sure my mom would've not wanted to be photographed anyway.

I'm going to hijack this post to report about Meg's basketball game.  Tonight she played a tough game.  She missed many opportunities to put the ball in the basket during the game but it was her determination that came through in the end.  With the game tied at 10, the teams went to overtime to see who would win this defensive battle.  Meg had a couple of opportunities in the first overtime, but nothing fell for her or her teammates.  Luckily the other team couldn't score against our great defense, so it was on to overtime number 2.  This time Meg took advantage of most of her chances (I won't say anything about the 5 missed points on free throws).  She scored the first point, in what seemed like forever, on the second of two free throws.  Her next bucket came on a nice drive to the hole and a short shot.  Another basket came when one of her teammates stole the ball and Meg made the layup (finally).  She scored all 5 of her teams points and they celebrated a hard fought victory.  Their seventh in as many tries.  It was amazing to see how determined she was to win this game.  Her coach (and her dad of course) were so proud of her.  Her coach said to the team, "I wish I had a game ball to give away because I would give it to this girl right here."  Way to go Meg!

One silver flute in its case.  It belongs to a red haired 10 year old.  She is desperate.  If you have seen it please let us know.

Mattey has lost her flute.  This is the last place she knew she left it.  On Friday.  She thinks.
Missing Flute
She says she has looked everywhere for it.  I'm sure it couldn't be lost in her room.  She went to school today without it.  Her orchestra teacher told her she needed to keep looking for it.  (Thankfully she only has orchestra every other day.)  I suggested a few places to look but since the flute is her responsibility I'm going to let her sweat it out for a while and look for it herself.

Tissue Paper Art

After going with Mattey on her field trip I knew I wanted to do an art project with Kate, my friend down the street.  I gathered all the supplies and we did it today.  We had fun spending time together.  She didn't want me to take her picture so I'll show you what I made.
Tissue Paper Art
It's for Mickey.  It's called ND vs. Air Force.  Based on this event.  We used bleeding art tissue paper, water, paint brushes, and water color paper.  I just now realized I forgot the stealth bombers that flew overhead.  Maybe I can still put them in.  Actually they are in.  They just blend in.  ;)

Recovering Pillows

I have these not very attractive pillows that I've been itching to recover.  I bought fabric back in October.  It's been sitting in the studio waiting for me to get to it.  I finally have some motivation to get it done.  Sunday I'm having a lot of people over for a lunch and teacher training.  I wanted to make the window seat a little more cozy and that's where the pillows come in.  (I'm still looking for fabric to make a cushion so it will be a lot cozier.)

My original plan was to make this fax pleated pillow but then realized V started with strips of fabric and I really didn't want to cut up my fabric because it would mean spending a lot more time on the project.  So I googled pleated pillow and came up with this one.  I was all set to start it last night.  As I was scrolling down the tutorial I saw a different pillow at the bottom of the post.  I clicked on that and knew that was the one I was going to make.

I tucked Mickey into bed last night and got to work.  I was up until 2 am.  I was on a sewing high.  I didn't get it all done (the measuring took me a while) so I finished it today.

What do you think?
Gathered Pillow
I think it looks great.  (It's not as vibrant in person but when I edited the picture it made everything else look wrong.)  I like it with the brown pillow and the chenille blanket.  Now I have to make one more and the window seat should look a lot cozier.  Here's the tutorial if you want to make one too.

In other news the kids were out of school today.  I wasn't really looking forward to it (the bickering and trying to keep them from being in front of the tv/computer all day) so I invited some of our friends over.  We all had a great time.  The weather was nice enough that the kids played outside for a while.  We pigged out on pizza, fruit, chocolate milk, and rice krispie treats.  We'll have to do it again on the next day off.

Recipe Review

Tonight my parents came over for dinner.  I didn't know what to make.  Somehow somewhere on some website I signed up to get recipes via email.  I usually look but rarely read the mail.  I think I might have tried one or two recipes over the last several months.  I decided to try out a new recipe tonight.  (I forgot to take a picture.  Click on the link for a look if you need one.)  The consensus was that it was rather bland.  (Which was good for my irritable stomach.)  The rice also didn't fully cook.  I baked it longer than the recipe called for since there was moisture collected in the middle of the dish.  Oh well.  I tried.  It filled us up enough.  And then we had a brownie with ice cream.  I can't complain about that at all.

Eating Out, Amigos!

I had a basketball tournament game today over at Greene. I made a few shots and got pushed about twenty times. Later, after the game, the team and I headed over to Hacienda. I ordered a chimichanga and later ,for dessert, a fudge mountain slide. My friends and I were all cracking up and trying to imitate Coach Bynum and Coach N. It was awesome. Dad and I were gone for about nine hours, we had left the house around nine ten. The team and I won one game and lost two. Luckily, my calf wasn't in pain.

Playing Too Hard

And there are consequences to playing too hard.

Meg has been playing two to three basketball games a week for the last few weeks.  Tuesday she came home from her Jamboree with a major cramp in her left calf.  We treated it as best we could:  a hot bath, some stretching, a massage with icy hot.  Her leg muscle has not yet relaxed.  In fact her leg was swollen last night.  Mickey decided it was time to visit the doctor.  He took her today.  It turns out that she has a strained muscle. Big surprise, right?  There's not too much to do for it but give it time and don't over do it. ("Don't over do it" is the key in my opinion.)
Massaging the Strain
A massage could also help, unless someone pushes too hard and makes Meg cry.  Mickey and I are both guilty of this.

Museum of Art

A few weeks ago I got a note from Mattey's teacher asking if I could help chaperone a field trip.  I worked it out so I could go.  Mattey was thrilled because she never gets field trips and that I was going with her.  I was excited to go too. The trip was to a local Art Museum.  I haven't been there for over 2 decades so I was looking forward to looking around.

I got to school a few minutes before we were to leave.  We got on the bus and left. About a 1/4 of the way there the bus came to a rolling stop.  The bus died.  It did not want to restart.  We (me, a couple other moms, two teachers, and two classes) had to sit and wait for another bus to show up.  We waited about 10 minutes, but it seemed longer than that.  Thankfully it wasn't too bad.

Once we got to the museum we were taken on a very quick tour and then ushered upstairs to a studio for a hands on project.  (I wish I could have worked on a project too but I got a few good ideas for some media to work with.)  Mat sat at her table and worked hard on her abstract, mixed media art project.
Abstract Art
I've decided we need to go back to the museum for a family trip because there was a lot we didn't get to see.

It's been a long time since I've had a haul like this.
And we only had one child that came home with goodies like this.  That makes me a little sad that the girls are getting too old for Valentine's Day, at least at school.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Monday, February 13, 2012

All the kids went to school today.  Yay!  I had a very productive morning.  Then worked at the school library where Mat tracked me down and told me her stomach still hurt.  She came home with me.  She finished up her homework quickly since she didn't have much.  Later she pulled out a puzzle.  This lead to Kade wanting to do a puzzle too.  He was rewarded with one after taking a quick bath.  He needed a little help and Mickey didn't hesitate to get on the floor to do it with him.

Sunday, February 12, 2012

What can you say about Sunday?  They all pretty much seem the same to me.  Wake up alone.  Get showered/dressed.  Wake up kids.  Tell them to eat and get dressed.  Finish getting ready.  Tell kids to get moving.  Eat breakfast.  Tell kids to get ready, we're leaving in 10 minutes.  Brush teeth.  Yell to Tell kids we're walking out the door in 5 minutes.  Get on coat (depending on weather).  Yell to Tell kids I'm leaving and hope they follow me out the door and into the van.  We do have better days but we also have worse days.

Today was a little calmer.  The girls were both sick (stomach flu) and I left them home in bed.  Making sure one kid and myself get out the door on time is much easier than the norm.  I think I was actually a little on the happy side by the time we got to church.  Imagine that.

I didn't get around to taking a picture today.  There wasn't anything that really stuck out about today.  Other than my semi-happiness upon arrival at church.  And of course I would never think about taking a picture of myself.

We, the reds and I, finished watching Harry Potter 3.  Kade forgot to mention in yesterday's post that when the dementors first made their appearance on the train to Hogwarts he asked me to come sit by him.  I guess the suspense was too much for him.  After he knew what they looked like he was fine.  Thankfully the movie did not make him have any nightmares.

Harry Potter and the Dementors

It's Kade's turn to report.  He's dictating while I type.

Today we watched Harry Potter 3.  It was fun.  It was a good movie.  I kind of liked the dementors.  I like Harry Potter a bit, of the books and stuff.  My favorite part was when Harry Potter fell off his broom stick.

Fire Wood

A load of fire wood was dropped off at our house tonight.  (Thanks, J.)  It was very convenient since Mickey lit a fire and used up most of what we had left.

It looks like the germs didn't leave the house when I opened the windows yesterday.  Mattey was up puking at 4:30 this morning.  Thankfully for me Mickey is a morning person and can handle vomit.  He let me go back to sleep.  Thanks, Babe.  Will we ever be healthy again?  I hope it'll be soon.

Grilling in February

I just had to document the fact that I've grilled three times in the last week and a half because the weather is tolerable enough (for me) to do it.
Grilling in February
And I must say that grilled food in the middle of winter tastes even better than it does in the summer.

By the way, I'm feeling tons better today and Mat was back in school.  I did four loads of laundry and opened windows to let all the germs escape.

Hearts All Around

I must be getting better.  I did some sewing today.  Last week I started cutting hearts out of felt.  I even let Mat help me during Kade's piano lesson.  I have been seeing felt garlands all over the internet in various shapes.  Here's my Valentine garland.
Heart Garland
I made a few of these and hung them around the house.  Kade was glad I didn't put one in his room.  Mickey's glad they won't be around forever.  Mattey, who stayed home with a sore throat today, thought they were so cute.

I think the sewing did me in.  I'm exhausted.  Guess I'm not totally recovered yet.

Science Project

Meg has been working on her science project for a few weeks now.  Tonight she put the final touches on it.  (I had to make a few suggestions and a few splats, for color.)
Science Project
Are you wondering what stain remover worked best at getting out mustard and ketchup?  OxiClean.  It worked really well and she only soaked it for 20 minutes instead of the recommended hour.

Illness Update

We decided to keep Kade home today. You know, the wait 24 hours after they puke rule. I think he is recovered. He played the kinect for a long time today. He also ate over 100 grapes. He said that's what made him feel better. Mickey is on the mend. He worked from home today which was so very helpful to me. I feel worse than I did yesterday. My sinuses hurt really bad but they seem to be constantly leaking since I'm blowing my nose quite often. I'm also sneezing, coughing, and just plain miserable. Unfortunately for me meds either don't work or make me sick so I then take nothing. I thought a good night's sleep would do me good but I can't seem to get that. I've been laying in bed for over 2 hours and have yet to fall asleep. I can't get comfortable. I have to blow my nose and empty my bladder frequently too. I'm a mess.

Anyone thinking of visiting probably shouldn't. Not that we get a lot of visitors anyway.

Super Bowl

We've been planning to watch the Super Bowl for a little while now.  I even started my goodie baking yesterday.  But I'd better start from the beginning of the day.

This morning at church Kade leaned over to me and said he felt like he was going to throw up.  We almost ran out of the chapel trying to avoid any messes.  We made it to the bathroom but nothing happened.  I gave him a pepto but he was looking more pale than normal so I decided it was probably best to take him home.  I arranged for the grandparents to bring the girls home.  Kade and I got home and found Mickey in the "shakuzi".  He still wasn't feeling good enough to leave the house.  Hopefully he'll feel like working tomorrow, at least from home.  Kade decided to hop in the tub.  The boys soaked for a while.  Then I suggested to Kade that he lay in bed and watch a movie on his iPod.  He did.  Around 12:30 I got up to check on him.  He was asleep.  This kid never naps.  So when he does you know he's not feeling well.  About an hour later he came in our room where we were resting.  (Did I mention that somehow Mickey's germs have made their way to me?  Thanks, Babe.)  Kade looked a little out of it.  He laid down on the chaise.  I said something about him taking a nap.  He replied, "I didn't take a nap."  I told him he was snoring when I went in his room.  Then he said, "Maybe that's the reason I'm smokin' hot."  Mickey and I cracked up laughing.  The boys went downstairs for a snack.  I'm glad I stayed in bed.  Kade's stomach must not have liked the snack because it sent it right back up.

About 2 hours before the game started we watched The Perfect Game.  It's a great family movie. Even Mattey ended up watching it and she "hates baseball".  That's when I started making the rest of the game food:  Touch Down Taco Dip, peanut butter filled celery, grapes, and then later the chicken wings, pizza, and of course cookies and brownies.

We filled our plates and settled in to watch the game.  We missed the first little bit because the movie went  longer than we thought it would.  But we were happy to see the Giants were ahead.  For some reason Mat was excited about watching Madonna's half time show.  It was entertaining and she kept a good amount of clothes on. After half time we sent the girls off to bed.  We let Kade stay up since he'll be staying home tomorrow and he took a nap.  He passed out towards the end of the third quarter.
Sleeping through the Game
Mickey and I were biting our nails and holding our breath, figuratively, throughout the fourth quarter.  Our team, at least the one we decided to cheer for, won.  Yay, Giants!

Saturday, February 4, 2012

We're trying something new.  Saturday's posts will now be written by the rest of the family.  I thought it would be good to get someone else's point of view every once in a while.  Mattey will start off our Guest Posting Saturdays.

For a few nights now I've been talking about having Kade come and sleep with me. Usually he using a feather bed that Mom and Dad keep in their room. But last night he used his old tent. It was my idea for him to put the feather bed inside the tent, like this.
Kade said,"It was very comfy. It took me about 10 or 11 min. to get to sleep."In the morning his cough woke me up at about 4:00 a.m! I thought it was about 7:00 a.m [I don't look at the clock] so we went downstairs and watched a movie. Dad came downstairs and told us to go back to bed.So we went back up to my room. Apparently we did go back to bed because we woke up 7:40ish. Hopefully it will never happen AGAIN!

A Surprise

Pro Flowers
This always makes me smile.  I love it when my loving husband sends me flowers.  They look even better outside the box.

Poor Mickey has a sinus infection so it looks like he'll be going through a couple hundred more Kleenexes.

100 Days

I wish this post was about 100 Days of Summer but...I guess we have a while for that since the rodent saw his shadow this morning.  Like we ever have an early Summer.  The post is really about 100 Days of School.  That is something to celebrate, isn't it?  Well, they do at school.  The elementary school, that is.  I asked Meg how her 100th day of school was and I was grouchily informed that that was for elementary school and not middle school.  Excuse me.

For the 100th day of school Kade was supposed to bring in 100 of one thing.  He chose marshmallows.  He had a lot of other ideas but I talked him into something easy and cheap.  At school he made a necklace with 100 Fruit Loops.
100 Days Necklace
It smelled and looked good when he pulled it out of his bag.  I almost had to eat it.  I restrained myself because I'm sure that would have made him cry.

Speaking of 100 things, I think Mickey has gone through about 100 Kleenexes today.  He's got a bad cold.  He stayed home from work but could not get the sleep he wanted and probably needed to recover.

Is it Spring?

As I've already mentioned before our winter weather has been really weird.  Yesterday was in the 50s.  Today I saw a few robins.  And this is what's remaining of the snowman Mickey and Kade built.
Snowman's Remains
Could Spring really be on the way?  Oh, I hope so.  But I'm not going to hope too much because I'm sure there'll be a blizzard coming sometime, probably in May.
