He's 7

He's 7
Kade turns 7 today.  (I mean, 5 years and 24 months.  I told him he can't be older than 5.  Ever.)

We already had his party so we just had a small celebration of his special day with our family.  He got to open one present this morning before school (baseball themed knobs for his dresser).  I took in treats for his class.  Mickey picked him up from school.  He opened some more presents in the afternoon (lots of legos and monster trucks).  We had Kade's requested birthday dinner of roasted turkey roast, corn, biscuits, and pasta.  Then a big cookie from Martin's.

Last year I accidentally started a new tradition with Kade on his birthday.  He asked for a 7 shirt.  I was happy to honor his request.  I found a great tutorial on how to take two shirts to make a baseball style one.  Then I sewed on two 7s.  The one on the back is big, like a baseball shirt would have.  It turned out cute, if I do say so myself.
  The 7 Shirt
Happy Birthday, Kade!  We are so lucky to have you in our family.  You make us laugh all the time.  You are a great little man to have around.  So helpful, sweet, and smart.  Love you.  Now stop growing up, please?

VCD & Allergies

Have you ever heard of vocal cord dysfunction?  I hadn't until today.

Mickey took Meg to an allergy/asthma doctor today.  She's been having a hard time breathing during active times, especially basketball.  The asthma inhaler didn't seem to work.

It turns out that Megan has vocal cord dysfunction and not asthma.  (I'm not going to go into it but if you want to know more about vcd I recommend reading the link above.)  It appears as asthma but is not treated the same way.  Supposedly it's very common.  It usually shows up in very competitive, high achieving, athletic girls.  Um, I think Meg fits in all those categories.  She now has a different inhaler she's supposed to use before activity.  Hopefully this will help her breath better.

Meg also had an allergy test while there.  She's allergic to a lot of things.  Look at her back.
The weird thing is she doesn't seem to get sick the way Mickey does.  Hers tend to be more of a contact thing.  Especially cats.

Lots of Locks

This morning I was standing in my bedroom doorway and as I watched Meg walk down the hall toward me I thought, "Oh, she finally did something with her hair (besides a ponytail, that is)."  Then it hit me, "Oh, yeah.  I cut it off last night."

This is what it looks like today.  It's a little choppy but it'll do for now.
short hair

This is what happened last night after Kade's party.
Twelve Inches
Put hair in a ponytail.  Measure 11-1/2".
snip, snip
Let me go at it with the scissors.  (We really needed a good pair for this job.  It took several cuts to get through all that thick hair.)
a few tears
Have a few tears when the tail is off.

Meg was ready for the haircut.  Mickey said something about a little girl being happy with the wig made from her hair and then all three of us teared up.

When the hair is dry we will be sending it to Locks of Love

Almost 7

We had Kade's birthday party today.  The party was baseball themed and I didn't take a single picture of the decor or food so you'll have to use your imagination.

The Food:  We had hot dogs (already in a bun & wrapped in foil, just like at the baseball park), nachos, popcorn, peanuts, and for something a little healthier, fruit and veggies.  The goodie bags were filled with Bazooka gum, cotton candy suckers, cracker jacks and a few other things.  I made cupcakes and decorated them as baseballs.  The cake was supposed to be a mitt but didn't look exactly like one.  (Kade thought it was great so that's all that matters.)
make a wish
The Decor:  I had the birthday banner hung on the mantle.  I made a string of manly pennants and hung them around the island.  I made a baseball diamond beanbag game (the holes were a little too small) and we had a knock down the can game.  That was a hit.

Spring Blossoms

I had such an urge to go for a little walk and photograph some of the spring blossoms on our street.  Here it is March 22nd and Spring is in full swing.  Love it!

And I couldn't not take a picture of the almost seven-year-old who was only too happy to accompany me on his bike.

Snacking Outside
It was just too nice out not to have a bedtime snack out on the deck.

A First

Last night Meg had a sports banquet.  I made an entree and a dessert.  I had been craving oatmeal raisin chocolate chip bars so I made two pans.  We came home with a bunch of leftovers because there was actually plenty of food this time.

This afternoon before picking up the girls I dropped a plate of cookies off to our friends, so I wouldn't eat them all.  Kade loudly announced that he wanted to stay and play with Noah.  Amy was very nice and let the rude boy stay.  The plan was for him to come home later for dinner and family movie night.  Our friends had gotten the same movie (Puss In Boots) to watch and somehow Meg got invited over to watch it at their house and Kade stayed.  (Mattey enjoyed being the only child for a while.)  Then the little bugger invited himself to sleep over.  I didn't really think he'd make it but I took over a few necessities anyway, still expecting a call from Kade around 11:00.  The call never came.
Something's Missing
It was weird not having Kade here for bedtime but he loved everything about the sleepover.  I'm sure he'll be inviting himself over again soon.

Warm Temps

The weather has been so lovely lately.  I am not complaining one bit that we are having late spring/early summer weather and it's still officially winter.  Today's high was 81.

I was a little late getting the picture but still, 78!

Jumping Rope

Kade has been looking forward to this day for a long time.  Today is Jump Rope for Heart at school.  For the last few weeks Kade has been practicing his jumping on a daily basis.

I was thinking of going in to school this afternoon (when he told me he'd be jumping) to take a few pictures of the rope jumper but I'm glad I didn't.  The event was first thing this morning.  So we'll have to settle for a picture from the deck.

March Madness

Mickey had the activity for Family Home Evening tonight.  He made us all fill out a March Madness bracket.  As proof that I did one he took my picture.
March Madness
I'm sure I won't do very well but I really don't care either.  Mat's of the same mind.

And the Winner is...

Can you pick the winner?

Is it one of these cars?
The Derby Racers
Or this chili?
Winning Chili

If you haven't guessed from the pictures, today was the pinewood derby and the chili cook-off.  Our friends, the Stones, came with us.  Noah and Kade had a great time at the race.

A Nap

All week Meg has had a cough.  It is pretty frequent and not very gentle to her throat.  She had ISTEP Tuesday and Wednesday so we couldn't make an appt. to take her to the doctor.  Her schedule was clear today so we went.

It turns out she has a bad virus, of course that's all it is.  That's all it ever is but the doctor gave us an Rx for antibiotics just in case she gets worse over the weekend.  That was nice of him.  He also prescribed a really good cough medicine to help her through the night.  The doctor backed me up and talked Meg into going home instead of back to school for some rest.  She took the cough medicine and rested in the recliner in front of the tv.  Hours later she finally fell asleep.  (I wonder how much she fought the sleep.)

She slept for at least 3 hours.  Kade snuck up on her and took a picture for the blog.
Taking a Nap
Unfortunately there's a lot of natural back light that didn't help the picture turn out very well.  I'll take it though since Kade took the initiative to take the picture and I didn't shoot anything else today.

We hope you get better soon, Meg.

Missing Vacuum
This is the spot.  The spot where you sit waiting for me to walk you around the house.  The spot where you wait around to take care of all the dirty work.

Dyson, I miss you.  You have been gone for a week and a half.  My life is not the same without you.  The house is not the same without you.  The grit on the floor is getting unbearable.  When you come home I will take you on a walk through the house and show you how you've been missed.  I hope you are as good as new when I see you again.  I can't wait for your return.

...that I've been working on a project.

Photographing B

Our neighbor came to the door this afternoon asking if the reds could help her with a project for school.  They happily agreed to help her.  Once I found out she needed some photos taken I asked if she wanted me to help as well.  She said yes.  We armed ourselves with cameras and followed her to her house.

B needed some pictures of herself doing things she likes to do, i.e. softball and volleyball.  She is supposed to write poems about the pictures.  We went to the backyard for the photo shoot.  Her mom was also there taking pictures, when she wasn't passing a ball to B.  Mat had a camera and took this great shot of how things looked during the shoot.

Getting Ready for the Derby

Working on the Pinewood Car
Me and my dad were building on my pinewood derby car.  It was fun.  We used a hammer, glue, and sandpaper.  We are going to paint it green.

I can't wait for the race.
